The casino variant of 3 Card Poker is quite a recent invention, credited to UK player Derek Webb who was able to patent the idea in 1997. With the intention of creating a casino poker that played with the speed of other traditional table games, the game proved a success with players in the land-based casinos it first appeared in. The rights to the game were acquired by U.S. gaming giant Shufflemaster (now part of SG Digital) in 1999, and today online players can easily find the game with operators who license gaming products from SG Digital’s IGT brand.
The first impression we had on loading the latest version of this 3 Card Poker game is that IGT has clearly paid attention to making this very mobile friendly. The attractively presented table is seen in plan view, and the user controls allow intuitive staking on the game’s main Ante / Play bets together with the optional Pair Plus side bet if you love a little side bet action!
We also really liked the level of customisation possible in the settings menu, allowing the tailoring of the audio, speed of play and even the colour of the baize. Very nice, and we’re delighted that the one option that IGT hasn’t bothered with is to provide any atrocious background music that some other developers still seem to think adds to the playing experience!
Trigger a deal and a smooth animation and card graphics with great realism make for a very agreeable recreation of real-world play. There’s something very compelling about the execution of the events on this table that is hard to describe but means we found ourselves very engaged in playing this game, and made it an especially enjoyable choice to play on our mobile devices during this review.
Verdict
IGT’s 3 Card Poker makes for a fine choice if you enjoy online table gaming and are looking to break away from the usual suspects of Blackjack and Baccarat when it comes to casino card games. The success of the original game in land-based casinos is easy to understand once you get savvy with the rules and strategy, and it offers a pretty decent RTP to warrant its continued success online.
